Now that spring has arrived, you’re probably going to start doing yard work and gardening. Even if your back feels strong, a small misalignment can cause major problems when doing something simple like raking or lifting. Luckily, there are measures you can take to avoid pain and injury while working in the yard this spring.
- Drink water! One of the main causes of muscle spasms is dehydration. Ensuring that your body is properly hydrated will prevent cramps and spasms. Every chemical reaction that takes place in the body requires water; especially those reactions that help provide energy and muscle contractions.
- Warm up! Yes, we said it! Gardening may not seem like exercise but it is. While gardening we perform various movements like pulling, reaching, twisting, lifting, digging, kneeling and squatting. All of these activities have the potential to cause an injury. Staying limber will help prevent injuries, especially if gardening for multiple hours. It only takes a few minutes. Move around and stretch before getting to work.
- Vary your tasks! Most back and spine injuries start from repetitive motions that can cause wear and tear on the muscles, ligaments and tendons that stabilize the spine. Mix up your gardening tasks and do not continuously perform the same task for an extended period of time.
- Protect your lower back! When you’re going to lift an object, don’t just use your back muscles. Use your legs – bend your knees like you’re going to sit in a chair. That removes strain from your spine that could set off a back injury. When changing positions, use your arm strength to move around to avoid putting all of the strain on your back and torso.
Unfortunately, even the most careful, fit gardeners can injure themselves. If you experience pain or difficulty moving for more than a day after gardening or working in the yard, or if these problems are preventing you from gardening or working in the yard, you may have instabilities in your spine. At OWL Chiropractic, we use cutting-edge technology to evaluate your spine and target the root of the problem. Don’t let pain prevent you from doing the things you love! Call us today at (717) 517-8195 to schedule an initial visit. The cost of new patient visits is just $25, all of which we donate directly to the Lancaster County SPCA.
It’s a common misconception that those who have had back or neck surgery don’t need to or can’t go to the chiropractor. That couldn’t be further from the truth – chiropractic care can still benefit those still experiencing pain post-surgery.
Below are x-rays from a 53 year old male patient that has suffered from neck pain for over ten years as a result of multiple car accidents and sports injuries. A surgeon fused two vertebra in his neck, but even after surgery the pain persisted. The surgery was a temporary fix that didn’t correct the root of the problem.
After four months of specific chiropractic care at OWL Chiropractic his neck problems have resolved. Below you can see the measurable improvements on his x-rays. Note the improvement of the angle of the atlas (C1) as well as the improvement of the curve in his neck. Restoring proper structure to the spine alleviates pressure on his spinal cord and vertebral discs, resulting in his symptom resolution.
Here at OWL Chiropractic, we’re able to take on the challenge of adjusting patients that have had neck or back surgery, due to our state of the art tools, advanced analysis, and technique. If you’ve had surgery but still experience pain, we can help! Give us a call at (717) 517-8195 to schedule an appointment.
It’s a common misconception that chiropractors only treat back pain. Proper spinal health is key to maintaining optimal organ function.
Pictured here are x-rays from a patient that was experiencing digestive issues. She had a subluxation, which is the misalignment of a vertebra, in her lower spine. The subluxation was cutting off the nerve supply to her digestive system, resulting in stomach discomfort and irregular bowel movements.

After 3 months of care, the subluxation has been reduced, restoring nerve function to her digestive system. With regular chiropractic care, the patient’s condition has drastically improved.
Regardless of what health issue you’re experience, chiropractic can help. Call us today at 717-517-8195 to make your first appointment.
A properly developing nervous system as a child is key to maintaining a high level of health as an adult!
The following is an example of one of our pediatric patients, a 9 year old female. She had been complaining of increasingly worsening headaches, which she would get specifically after riding in the car or doing schoolwork. Her mother told us that her daughter has been under the care an observation of a neurologist, who wanted to begin extensive medication therapy if her headaches did not improve by early December.
The left film is the patient prior to chiropractic care. The right film is the patient after 12 adjustments.
After one month of care, the patient and her mother reported no further issues with headaches, and the patient no longer requires medications to control headaches. The lack of curve in her neck in the left film had distorted the alignment of her head and cervical vertebrae in relation to the rest her body, causing tension on her spinal cord in her neck. After 12 adjustments, the patient’s curve recovered within a normal curve range and improved alignment of her head and cervical vertebrae in relation to the rest of her body.
Below are x-rays from one of our more challenging patients. He was hit by a van while on a motorcycle, resulting in a shattered pelvis, tibia and fibula on the left side. His shattered and broken bones required chains, rods, screws, pins, and even pieces of his own bone and coral in order to be fixed. On top of this, he lost the ability to lift his left foot, a condition called drop-foot, due to nerve damage.
The patient came to us after 10 years of physical therapy. He was still suffering with severe pain from the accident, with 10/10 pain in his left lower back, hip, lower leg and foot related to the nerve damage. Due to the excruciating pain, he couldn’t drive for more than 15 minutes or perform simple household tasks like vacuuming and lawn care.
The x-rays of his pelvis after receiving chiropractic care are shown below. In just 2 adjustments he experienced a 50% decrease in his pain levels that correlate with the changes in structure between the first and second x-ray. After 6 weeks of care, the patient was able to drive in the car for multiple hours and perform tasks such as light yard work and could even work out. All of these improvements are related to the changes in the structure of his spine. The accident had displaced the bones in his pelvis and lower spine, which was compressing the nerves that controlled the entire left leg. By correcting the structure of the spine, he has gained more control of his leg with less pain.

Are you wondering how effective chiropractic care is? The proof is right here in the x-rays!
Here are the before and after x-rays of a 27 year old male with neck, mid- and low-back pain and headaches. After 12 visits, he reports improvement in all presenting symptoms along with improved sleep, more energy and a better outlook on life. It all correlates with the HUGE improvement in the structure of his spine!
