All the systems in your body (your immune system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, digestive system, reproductive system, etc.) are all controlled and coordinated by your brain and nervous system.
Do you know what protects all of it? That’s right - your spine! Your spine is what keeps your brain and nervous system communicating with the rest of your body.
Take a second to think about that.
Picture your nervous system as the electrical control panel in your house. Now imagine you’re standing in the kitchen and the lights go out. What do you do next? You try to figure out what has happened. You look into the next room and the lights are still on so you think, “Maybe the light bulb blew out I’ll replace it.” So you grab a new light bulb, yet there is no light. Next you think “Oh man, the whole fixture is shot, I'll have to run out and get a new one.” But before you head out to the store, you remember the electrical control panel. You head down to the basement just to find out a breaker has flipped off so you flip it back on and power is restored to your house.
The same is true with how the spine and nervous system work together. If you have a problem in your body, you can medicate, mask or bandage a problem but until you restore the power (your electrical control panel) it won’t fix the issue. Our nervous systems are so powerful, yet most people ignore this system until it’s in a state of severe dysfunction or in the case of your house, when the lights go out.
Why do we do this? I have a few theories.
First, we can’t physically see our spine and nervous system, so they are easy to ignore. I bet if our spines were on our faces they would get a lot more attention!
Secondly, we live in a society where most people don’t take a proactive approach to their health, but rather a reactive one. However, when it comes to our homes and cars we make sure to keep up on all the maintenance to prevent any major breakdowns. Why is our body any different??
Thirdly, we simply aren’t taught much when it comes to our nervous system. The general population is unaware that our nervous system controls everything in our bodies from the ability to digest food, walking, talking, breathing, making our hearts beat and even blinking. I feel if we were educated properly on our nervous system, we would take better care of it. We would understand how important it is to be proactive and not wait for the pain to set in or failure to occur before getting checked out.
Here is something else to think about. Most people don’t think there is anything wrong until they feel pain, but the truth is that only 10% of our nervous system perceives pain. This means that by the time you actually feel pain, the dysfunction has been there for a long time. In fact, 60% of the nerve has to be compromised before you feel pain.
With that being said, pain is not a good indicator of your health. Consider a heart attack - by the time you feel the pain going down your left arm, in your chest or in your back you’re already having the heart attack! This problem was years in the making but you couldn’t feel the actual pain until it was too late.
Because your nervous system is so important to your overall health, it is important to monitor it. Here at OWL Chiropractic we do this by utilizing an infrared thermal scan before and after every adjustment. These scans help us monitor the current state of your sympathetic nervous system.
Infrared thermal scans are also being used to detect very early stages of breast cancer. According to The National Cancer Institute, thermography as a diagnostic procedure is probably the best test to see indications of breast cancer.
Why? Tumor tissues do not have an intact sympathetic nervous system, therefore it cannot regulate heat loss (vasodilation and vasoconstriction). Healthy tissues can regulate temperature via vasodilation and vasoconstriction because they have a nerve supplying blood flow.
These differences are picked up on infrared thermal scans as abnormal. And you want to know what is amazing? OWL Chiropractic uses thermography scans of your spine to monitor and see how your nervous system is doing at every visit.
Your health is too important to make guesses on, it should be measured. Remember no other systems in your body can work properly unless the master system, your nervous system is working properly.
This is what we specialize in! Give Owl Chiropractic a call and get checked out today!
